Description
Loperamide hydrochloride is the active ingredient in the over-the-counter medication marketed as Imodium and Kaopectate. Loperamide hydrochloride is used to treat diarrhea temporarily. However, if symptoms persist while taking this medication or continue for more than a few days, medical care may be needed.
Usage
1 | Loperamide hydrochloride are indicated for the control and symptomatic relief of acute nonspecific diarrhea and of chronic diarrhea associated with inflammatory bowel disease. |
2 | Loperamide hydrochloride are also indicated for reducing the volume of discharge from ileostomies. |

Loperamide hydrochloride are contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to loperamide hydrochloride or to any of the excipients.

Loperamide hydrochloride is contraindicated in patients with abdominal pain in the absence of diarrhea.

Dosage
Loperamide hydrochloride should be taken as directed on the medicine packaging. Generally, adults take either 4 tsp. or two capsules after the first diarrhea episode and then just 2 tsp. or one capsule after subsequent diarrhea episodes.
The medication should be taken with a glass of water and should not be taken more than three times within a 24-hour period. It should not be taken if stools appear bloody or black. In addition, it should not be taken if the diarrhea episodes are a result of taking an antibiotic medication.
