Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a natural active ingredient widely distributed in animals and plants. The seeds, rhizomes and tissue fluids of plants such as beans, ginseng and Chinese herbal medicines all contain γ-aminobutyric acid. In animals, γ-aminobutyric acid exists almost only in nerve tissue, and the content in brain tissue is about 0.1-0.6 mg/g tissue. Immunological studies have shown that the highest concentration of γ-aminobutyric acid is in the substantia nigra of the brain.
Gamma-aminobutyric acid is a strong neuro-inhibitory amino acid with physiological effects of sedation, hypnosis, anticonvulsant and blood pressure lowering. It is an inhibitory neurotransmitter (Inhibitory Neurotransmitter), which can inhibit the activity of animals and reduce energy consumption. GABA acts on γ-aminobutyric acid receptors in animal cells. The γ-aminobutyric acid receptor is a chloride ion channel. The inhibitory or excitatory activity of γ-aminobutyric acid depends on the chloride ion concentration inside and outside the cell membrane. The activation of γ-aminobutyric acid receptors leads to the opening of chloride ion channels, which can increase the permeability of the cell membrane to chloride ions, allowing chloride ions to flow into nerve cells, causing hyperpolarization of the cell membrane and inhibiting the activation of nerve cells.
